GP training in Gold Coast district

The Gold Coast district is a popular location to train as a GP.

The area spans 70 km of pristine coastline from South Stradbroke Island to Coolangatta, and stretches west across the hinterland to the quaint, down-to-earth townships of Canungra and Beaudesert. The Gold Coast is one of our four training districts and corresponds with the Gold Coast Primary Healthcare Network. It crosses zones three and four, which means there are limitations on which of our registrars can train in this area. You can find out more about this in the applicant section of this site.

I don’t think I could ever get bored as a GP. It is such an amazing challenge to constantly see new patients with such varied presentations and complaints.

About Gold Coast district

The Gold Coast’s beach towns offer a great lifestyle, from sun, surf and sand to a lively nightlife. The spectacular Gold Coast hinterland is a 30 minute drive from the coast. It has sprawling rainforests, rolling farmland, charming villages, and wineries. You’re also close to theme parks and plenty of other tourist attractions.

Training practices

There are 38 accredited practices in the region offering a range of special interests and education opportunities. The major hospitals servicing the district are Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital, which both fall under the umbrella of Gold Coast Health.

Primary health network

The Gold Coast district’s PHN, which goes by the name of Healthy GC, is implementing strategies based on the Australian Government’s six key priorities for targeted work: mental health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, population health, health workforce, eHealth and aged care.

Healthy GC’s specific aims include reducing preventable hospitalisations, improving rates of childhood immunisation, increasing screening rates for breast, bowel and cervical cancer, and improving access to mental health services. Find out more at www.healthygc.com.au

Medical educators

Registrars receive most of their training in practice under the guidance of a GP supervisor. There are also two medical educators in the Gold Coast district who mentor our registrars during their training: Dr Jon Linnet and Dr Chris Briggs.
