From the heart of bustling Brisbane to the laid-back beaches of ‘Straddie’, this district offers great lifestyle and training options.
Brisbane South is one of our four training districts for GP registrars, corresponding with the Brisbane South Primary Health Network. The area covers Brisbane’s suburbs south of the Brisbane River, from North Stradbroke Island across to Ipswich. Brisbane South spreads into our zones three and four. It’s a popular training location for GP registrars, with limited placements available.
It’s good to live in a community where people get to know you. People look after each other and look out for each other. Patients become your friends, friends become your patients. Living and working in the same rural community, you develop an identity.

South Brisbane is home to The Gabba, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Queensland Museum and Science Centre.
The Kangaroo Point cliffs, nestled alongside the river’s edge, are home to the Nunukul Yuggera tribe, whose members gather at the base of the cliffs and tell stories of the Dreamtime through song and dance. No matter what time of day, the vista across the river, the city, and off towards the mountains makes the cliffs feel like an oasis. From picnicking to abseiling, the cliffs are a beautiful place to escape the city life for a moment.
If you’re looking for a change from the ordinary, try living in the Redlands, a cluster of mainland and island communities along the coast of Moreton Bay from Brisbane to Logan. For a community tucked right in beside the city, the relaxed lifestyle is surprisingly different. The sleepy fishing villages of North Stradbroke Island are a particularly popular destination, where you can camp on the beach.
Primary health network
The Brisbane South PHN has rolled out many targeted programs in the region, including initiatives aimed to improve refugee health, Indigenous health, mental health, aged care, child health, maternal health, chronic disease management and maternal health. Training practices
The list of practices and hospitals servicing the area is extensive. There are 120 accredited practices supported by nine hospitals: Greenslopes Private Hospital, Ipswich Hospital, Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Logan Hospital, Mater Adult Hospital, Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, and Redland Hospital.
Medical educators
There are eight medical educators in the Brisbane South district who mentor our registrars during their training: Dr Amelia Duhs, Dr Cathy Lee, Dr Sarah Kay, Dr Matt Masel, Dr Marie-Louise Dick, Dr Brendan Triggs, Dr Belinda Glasson and Dr Kate Fawcett. Registrars receive most of their training in practice under the guidance of a GP supervisor.
